OptiMap + TomTom = Powerful Routing Application

By   March 14, 2009

I’m finally announcing the most requested feature on OptiMap: The ability to export itineraries easily to TomTom GPS navigation devices. GPSes are becoming standard in cars, and are invaluable to anyone who is doing deliveries or needs to visit unfamiliar locations. Those people often go to many places in a single day, and can benefit greatly from OptiMap in terms of time and gas saved.

In-car navigation systems have several advantages over printed directions:

  • No need to stop and look at a map / textual directions
  • You know where you are all the time
  • If you make a wrong turn, you get re-routed
  • No paper and ink wasted

To send directions to your TomTom device, do the following:

  1. Make sure you have TomTom HOME installed.
  2. Use OptiMap to calculate your trip as you normally would.
  3. A new button labeled ‘Send to TomTom’ appears above the driving directions. Click it.
  4. Click the ‘+TOMTOM’ button that appears in a new page. This will launch the TomTom HOME application showing the route.
  5. Follow instructions in the TomTom HOME application to install the itinerary on your device.

Please also note that I coded this solution completely in the dark, since I do not have a TomTom GPS. This means that I have not personally tested how the solution works on various real devices. Below is a list of devices that have been tested by various visitors of this site.

  1. TomTom GO 720 (itinerary download works, have not navigated route yet)

Please post a reply to this thread if you have tested devices not listed above, or if you encounter problems.

Works great on the Tomtom Go 300.

Wonderful tool, been looking for this for a long time. Nice to see the “traveling salesperson” problem implemented for the masses to use.

I have tried your OptiMap but I have some problem. If you try to add these cities: Milan, Madrid, Bologna (in this order) and the click on “Calculate Fastest A-Z Trip” your application give this result: Milan-Madrid-Bologna (this is impossible because Milan is near Bologna).
If you try to add these cities: Milan, Bologna, Madrid you application give this result: Milan, Bologna, Madrid!

Are you sure your application working?

    Thanks

    Hello,

I had the following error when I click on “send to TomTom”

    Request Entity Too Large

    The requested resource
    /api/home/v2/verify/chooseHomeVersion
does not allow request data with GET requests, or the amount of data provided in the request exceeds the capacity limit.

FYI, I had 50 destinations for my route. How to resolve this?

    Thanks.

  7. Geir

@Isabel. I haven’t tested the TomTom export on more than 25 destinations, so it may be a limit on their side. However, some browsers also have limits on the size of GET requests built into them. I know internet explorer has that problem. Maybe you can try a different browser (e.g Chrome) and see if the problem is still there?

    Hello Geir,

Thank you for your quick reply!

    I did used Google Chrome.
I will try to export only 25 destinations at a time. I will let you know if it worked.

    Thank you again!

    Hello Geir,

I tried with 25 destinations and it worked! The itinerary was installed into the Tom Tom GPS. Now the problem is I don’t know how to retrieve it in the Tom Tom machine. It will be great if someone on this forum can guide me. I have a Tom Tom One.

    Thanks.

Hmm… I can’t really help you with that, since I don’t have a TomTom unit myself. Does anyone know this (how to access the itinerary on the TomTom One unit)?

  11. Warren

Hi Gier, Firstly thanks for Optimap…you just gave me backs several hours in my busy week 🙂

Does this system specifically use Google Maps Classic? if so, will anything change or stop functioning once Google remove Classic Maps?

    Cheers 🙂

Some students are able to grasp the concept early,
